Warner Bros. Animation will adapt The Ice Dragon, a medieval fantasy from George R.R. Martin that he wrote before Game of Thrones. If there’s anything author George R.R. Martin loves, it’s a good dragon. Where would his epic series of fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire be without its trio of flying fire-breathers Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion?

Even before publishing the book series that spawned HBO’s Game of Thrones, Martin had a thing for dragons. In 1980 the author penned a book called The Ice Dragon - and no, it was not a preview of what would ultimately happen to Viserion at the hands of the Night King. The Ice Dragon was in fact a children’s book, set in a medieval fantasy world not connected in any way to the Seven Kingdoms. It told the story of Adara, a young girl who befriends the titular Ice Dragon, who happens to be the only one who can save Adara’s home from destruction at the hands of invading bad dragons.

As reported by Deadline, Martin’s other dragon saga will now get its own adaptation. The Ice Dragon will come to big screens from Warner Bros. Animation, with Martin himself serving as producer alongside Vince Gerardis as executive producer. With this project, Martin for the first time dips his toe into the realm of family-oriented entertainment.

Besides the family-friendly The Ice Dragon, the Martin pipeline also includes the not-family-friendly Nightflyers, an adaptation of the author’s early horror novella. Syfy will air the series, which concerns a space mission that encounters deadly aliens. A recent first trailer for Nightflyers  promised the exact brand of gory thriller you would expect from the man who brought us Game of Thrones. As for Game of Thrones itself, production continues on season 8, which won’t hit screens until 2019. Martin also presumably continues work on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth Song of Ice and Fire novel, though it’s always possible he’s given up and doesn’t want to admit it.

Given the speed at which Martin writes, it’s very likely The Ice Dragon will release before The Winds of Winter (even though animated movies take many years to complete). In addition to Ice Dragon, Warner Bros. Animation’s upcoming slate includes a Cat in the Hat animated movie as well as The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. The studio has Teen Titans Go! to the Movies set for later this year, featuring Nicolas Cage as the voice of Superman, as well as Channing Tatum’s Yeti movie Smallfoot.
