Leading up to the release of writer/director Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot later this July, many fans of the 1980s-born paranormal comedy franchise have been less than impressed with the movie’s trailers. Other people have been left scratching their heads in regards to how to feel about the property’s return to the big screen, based on the movie’s second full-length U.S. trailer.
With lead actress Melissa McCarthy taking pity on the Ghostbusters reboot detractors as simply needing to “find a friend,” Feig has been put in the hot seat when it comes to defending the marketing strategy behind his new film. Regardless of the controversy surrounding the new movie, the original Ghostbusters cast (save, of course, for the late Harold Ramis) is in full support of the new movie and are slated to team up with the reboot’s cast to help promote the new film’s release.
As reported by USA Today, original Ghostbusters cast members Dan Aykryod, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts will join the likes of Ghostbusters reboot stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones for “Ghostbusters Day” on June 8 on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The union between the old and new Ghostbusters team is certainly the source of certain excitement for the cast and crew of the new film. Echoing that enthusiasm, Feig stated:
“Seeing the original and new Ghostbusters all together (will be) like being in the presence of the comedy gods on Mount Olympus. This is an epic summit of some of the funniest people on the planet. Long live the Ghostbusters!”
Given the fact that original Ghostbusters creator and screenwriter Aykroyd has already seen (and loved) the reboot, it’s more than likely that Murray, Hudson, and Potts will share some of that enthusiasm in kind. Whether or not general viewing audiences will be quiet as receptive to the two casts outward showing of mutual respect is in doubt, though fans of the franchise who are more willing to entertain the concept of the new reboot being good should be in for a real treat on"Ghostbusters Day" next week.
In due time, Fieg and company might yet surprise even the most hardened skeptic going into the Ghostbusters reboot with a film that will prove to be just as funny and heartfelt as the 1984 original directed by Ivan Reitman. With any luck, perhaps the likes of the original Ghostbusters united with their contemporary successors will serve to warm the hearts of Fieg’s most vocal detractors.
Ghostbusters will see theatrical release in the U.S. on July 15, 2016.
