News of a Gilmore Girls revival was welcomed by fans when it was announced back at the end of January. After creator Amy Sherman-Palladino parted ways with Warner Bros. and the show back in 2007, Gilmore Girls ended with a controversial season finale which left a bitter taste for many. Rumors of a revival at Netflix surfaced toward the end of 2015, but Palladino was quick to dismiss them, even though confirmation of Gilmore Girls’ return was announced soon after.
Gilmore Girls’ revival will debut on Netflix, with a run of four, 90-minute episodes. The majority of the original cast will return, including Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as mother/daughter duo Loreli and Rory Gilmore, respectively. Other returning cast include Jared Padalecki as Dean Forester, Milo Ventimiglia as Jess Mariano, Matt Czuchry as Logan Huntzberger, Liza Weil as Paris Geller, Keiko Agena as Lane Kim, David Sutcliffe as Christopher Hayden, Yanic Truesdale as Michel Gerard, and Sean Gunn as Kirk Gleason.
Edward Hermann, who played Richard Gilmore on earlier seasons of Gilmore Girls, passed away in January of 2015. One other notable absence from the returning cast for the revival has been Melissa McCarthy, who said she had not been invited to reprise her character, Sookie, in the new episodes. Things have changed though, as McCarthy is now indeed set to return to Stars Hollow - news that has been confirmed by McCarthy herself on the Ellen Show, as she told Ellen DeGeneres that “I’m going to go back and do it. Amy Sherman-Palladino is going to squeeze me in to do it. I’m very happy to go back to Stars Hollow.”

Prior to this, Palladino had said McCarthy hadn’t been written into the revival owing to her hectic schedule. McCarthy’s newest film, The Boss, has just opened in theaters, and she also has the Paul Feig-directed Ghostbusters coming out in July. Palladino went on to add in her statement that McCarthy was welcome back, even if just for a cameo, and she would gladly write her a scene.
However, McCarthy cast doubt over this when she took to Twitter, saying that no one invited her or Sookie back to Stars Hollow, but adding that she wished them all the best. Palladino then re-extended the invite, saying she could have the actress in and out in two hours if she wished to show up and shoot a scene, and it seems McCarthy decided this was doable after all.
McCarthy’s return still might only be brief; the actress is expected to shoot next week and there’s no confirmation if she will do more than one scene, but even so, her return will be welcomed by fans, who felt the longed for Gilmore Girls return just wouldn’t be the same without her. Filming is underway, and already images from the show’s revival have started to make their way online. We might not have a return date confirmed just yet, but it’s safe to say this is one revival we’re all very excited for.
