New posters for Godzilla: King of the Monsters have been released just as tickets finally go on sale. The monster blockbuster recently premiered its final trailer, promising some of the biggest cinematic battles of the year.
Ever since the first Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer and poster at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, fans have been highly anticipating the sequel. It has been a number of years since Gareth Edwards’ 2014 film, where Godzilla returned to the movies after a long absence. In addition to Godzilla himself, King of the Monsters is bringing an all-star cast of iconic creatures: Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. This is the first time an American studio is adapting these characters. Mothra is unarguably the most popular Japanese monster after Godzilla, and Ghidorah remains a fan-favorite as well. Rodan is one of the most famous flying creatures in pop culture.
Today, tickets went on sale for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. To celebrate the occasion, IMAX and Dolby Cinema released new posters for the film, both showcasing Godzilla and Ghidorah. First, we have the IMAX one, featuring Ghidorah about to descend on Godzilla. The second poster comes from Dolby Cinema, and shows Ghidorah looming menacingly in the background. See both below.
Tickets can be bought for showings as early as 4:00pm, May 30th. In 2014, when Godzilla was released in theaters, IMAX did something special for the usual countdown before the motion picture. At the end of the countdown, Godzilla’s piercing roar was heard. It’s not known if IMAX will do something for the new movie, but fans are hoping.
Marketing for King of the Monsters has greatly increased over the past few months. Legendary Studios is making sure everyone is aware of the film, and the kind of tone it’s going for. A common complaint for the 2014 film was that Godzilla wasn’t given enough screen time. The studio is making sure that audiences know this film is going to have big monsters throughout its entirety. Based on interviews and what we’ve seen so far, director Michael Dougherty seems to have a good understanding of the monsters as characters. As an example, last year Dougherty discussed Rodan, and how in a number of ways, the flying creature is actually stronger than Godzilla. This was true in the early TOHO movies, where Rodan and Godzilla were portrayed as equals.
Longtime Godzilla fans are lining up to watch the new movie, but the question is if the film can grab the general audience as well. The 2014 film did decent at the box office, but not amazing in comparison to other big movies that year. Godzilla: King of the Monsters seems to be hitting all the right notes for what a massive summer blockbuster looks like, so it should, in theory, do really well. No matter how well it does however, the MonsterVerse is continuing with Godzilla vs. Kong in March 2020. It is definitely a good time to enjoy giant creatures on the big screen.
