Update: Frances McDormand’s reps deny her involvement in Godzilla vs. Kong. The original story follows.
Godzilla vs. Kong has added Oscar winner Frances McDormand to its growing cast. McDormand recently won the Academy Award for best actress for her performance in Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The actress also lent her voice to Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs this year. McDormand appears in a small selection of films a year and audiences will get to see her in Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.
McDormand has a long career that stretches back to the 1980s. Her first Oscar nomination came in 1989 with her performance in Mississippi Burning. McDormand would win her first Oscar for best actress in a leading role with the 1997 film Fargo. She would go on to be nominated two times following her first win with films Almost Famous and North Country. Her second Oscar came with her role as Mildred in Three Billboards. A widely respected performer, McDormand chooses her roles carefully and often works with the Coen Brothers.
As reported by The Hashtag Show, McDormand will be joining the ensemble cast of Godzilla vs. Kong. McDormand will star alongside Kyle Chandler and Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown. The film will likely follow the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla. Adam Wingard is serving as director on Godzilla vs. Kong after having previously helmed Netflix’s Death Note and the 2014 thriller The Guest starring Dan Stevens. Writer J. Michael Straczynski, whose credits include the Netflix series Sense8 and 2013’s World War Z, is attached to the project.
This film will be the fourth installment in Legendary Studios’ “Monster-verse” after Godzilla, Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island and the upcoming Godzilla: King of Monsters. Godzilla vs. Kong will see “the Gigantic Kong meet the unstoppable Godzilla. The world watches to see which one becomes the king of all monsters.” While currently in pre-production, it was previously reported Godzilla vs. Kong will start filming this fall.
The addition of McDormand to the growing cast of this picture draws a lot of interest for her fans. The actress is rarely predictable, but has been known to move towards more independent features, usually with less action. While an interesting choice for one of her first roles since winning the coveted Oscar, McDormand has been consistent with all of her work. The addition brings in more credibility for the feature. With the canon of Kong and Godzilla films having a huge resurgence, the addition of McDormand could possibly draw fans of the actress who are unfamiliar with the monster movies. Not to mention, the actress will be meeting a whole new fan base. While little is known about McDormand’s role right now, with the film going into production in the next few months, fans will learn more about her character and the monster battle of a lifetime.
