Warning: SPOILERS for Young Justice #10
The days of watching Tim Drake play sidekick to Batman have been over for years, but it’s still a historic day in Tim’s life… now that he has officially debuted in DC’s Universe in his new superhero persona, Drake. And with a brand new costume to go with it.
The reveal seemed to lose much of it mystique long ahead of time, when Young Justice writer Brian Michael Bendis began teasing the change for Tim on social media, and even in the official solicitations text for future issues. But after delays and changes in story pushed Tim’s new rebirth forward much longer than expected, some of the steam escaped. But that is about to change, now that Drake finally bursts into existence. No longer hinted at, teased, or glimpsed: Drake is putting an end to Robin, and starting a new chapter for the leader of Young Justice.
The young heroes are still struggling to find their way home through the DC Multiverse, after dropping into the villainous Earth-3 and doing battle with their dark reflections. It was in this very story that Tim Drake met his own ‘Dark Robin,’ who seemed to scoff at the idea of still maintaining a sidekick moniker. The villain chose only their last name, Drake, to represent them. And instantly, Tim approved of the re-branding. Perfectly setting the stage for today’s Young Justice #10, when the young heroes re-assemble to put and end to their evil selves. The Stephanie Brown who became Batwoman jumps into the fight with them team, but it’s Drake who leads the charge. Take a look:
We doubt readers have heard Tim defend the name by explaining it’s “one of the most dangerous birds” for the last time. But it’s more likely to be his new costume that fans analyze and debate. What appeared at first to be a brown-and-gold version of his basic Red Robin body armor, is actually a more dramatic change. Fans will want to pick up their own copy of the issue to see this bit of Drake history playing out in real time. The official details and plot synopsis are embedded below:
